RF Measurement Technician

We are pioneering the introduction of innovative and disruptive low-profile multiple-beam satellite communications terminals for mobile and fixed applications. These highly integrated terminal systems combine elements of new advances in microwave lens optics, phased array antenna technology, and dynamic beam pointing control systems using analog and/or digital signal processing. Our terminal designs operate as fully electronic beam steering systems. Our IP has applications across a wide range of market sectors including: aeronautical, land mobile, maritime, and 5G, providing broadband, multi-beam, two-way communications with dynamic tracking of geostationary and non-geostationary satellites or terrestrial nodes.
Isotropic Systems is seeking an experienced RF/antenna technician to perform RF measurements of active microwave antenna prototypes, to assist in the assembly of said prototypes, and to prepare reports of the prototype antenna performance. Experience with antenna pattern measurements (e.g. in RF anechoic chambers) as well as bench measurements using a network analyzer are critical. The antenna prototypes will generally include printed circuit boards with active components and multiple RF paths, so experience with aspects of printed circuit board / electronics assembly, soldering/rework, debugging, and calibration are strong discriminators.
The candidate will be expected to work with the rest of the engineering team to design and execute consistent, effective test plans that satisfy business and technical goals. The successful candidate must be capable of both individual, self-driven work as well as other tasks performed in close collaboration with other technicians and engineers. The technician will be responsible for organizing, scheduling, and executing antenna tests of patterns and efficiency in an accurate, repeatable, and effective manner.
This role will be responsible for managing the in-house microwave measurement lab, and will be responsible for upkeep, maintenance, and expansion to continue to meet business and technical requirements.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Measurements / testing of microwave antenna prototypes and production designs
Bench tests, such as S-parameters, return loss, coupling, etc.
Pattern measurements (potentially to include far-field range, compact range, and/or near-field ranges)
Assembly and testing/debugging of RF prototypes
Placement and mounting of antenna components in a mechanical fixture
Running cabling between various components, circuit boards, etc.
Final assembly of circuit boards received from vendors (e.g. soldering or mounting connectors on a board that is already populated with SMT components)
Testing and debugging of active circuit boards
Calibration of RF components, circuit boards, etc.
Working with a software engineer to develop automated calibration and test procedures for RF components
Run those calibration and test procedures on prototype boards and components
Writing/modifying test procedure documentation
Manage the in-house RF measurement facility
Assembling professional slides and reports of measured performance
Limited travel to support measurements at external facilities
Skills and/or Needed Experience:
5+ years of experience
Use of network analyzers for component and antenna parameter measurements, preferably above 10 GHz
Measurement of antenna patterns using test ranges (far-field and near-field)
Familiarity with concerns/issues arising with microwave antennas/components
Work with RF printed circuit boards, components, cables, etc.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work with a team of local and remote engineers
Ability to act creatively to solve problems and think outside the box for better ways to meet objectives
Use of various types of RF test equipment, such as signal generators, spectrum analyzers, etc.
Automated electronic testing using scripts or other methods
Creating reports and presentations of measured performance
Familiarity and capability with hand tools and workshop items
Understanding of electronics and microcontroller design and operation
