Director of Systems Engineering

Isotropic Systems is seeking world class candidates to join a fast-paced, proven team working on cutting edge technology in a successful startup company that brings significant opportunity for the right candidate.

We are pioneering the introduction of innovative and disruptive low-profile multiple-beam satellite communications terminals for mobile and fixed applications. These highly integrated terminal systems combine elements of new advances in microwave lens optics, phased array antenna technology, and dynamic beam pointing control systems using analog and/or digital signal processing. Our terminal designs operate as fully electronic beam steering systems. Our IP has applications across a wide range of market sectors including: aeronautical, land mobile, maritime, and 5G, providing broadband, multi-beam, two-way communications with dynamic tracking of geostationary and non-geostationary satellites or terrestrial nodes.

Isotropic is seeking an experienced Director of Systems Engineering to define, develop and manage all aspects of the critical systems engineering for a range of innovative end-user terminals for satellite communications. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Engineering and working closely with peers across other engineering disciplines, the successful candidate will have a broad perspective and understanding of satellite or related communications engineering with a view of overseeing and ensuring the successful introduction and integration of new systems. The Director of Systems Engineering, along with the other Engineering Directors, will be jointly responsible to the SVP Engineering for ensuring that the product vision is realized through excellence in execution such that product lifetime quality metrics, manufacturable cost and performance goals are all met, in programs that are delivered within the project budget and on schedule. A key business need will be the dissemination of product requirements into system and subsystem specifications from RF to baseband. The Director of Systems Engineering will evaluate, plan, and implement the company processes, disciplines, and software tools for excellent systems engineering. Related responsibilities include: systems design; systems analysis; adherence to recognized and disciplined generation of top-level specifications and their proper flow down to subsystems; validation; coordination with integration and test teams to ensure the successful interoperation of all subsystems including RF, beam tracking and control, modem integration and interfaces, signal processing, mechanical, packaging, environmental, thermal management, and reliability. A good understanding of overall communications terminal requirements is essential.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in building and leading a team in the development of complex systems, with strong managerial and technical capability. Desirable qualities include: familiarity with procedures for achieving product interoperability and connectivity with other systems on aeronautical, maritime and land mobility platforms; modem integration with a dynamically-tracking SATCOM terminal; certifications such as understanding ARINC and DO-160 requirements for aeronautical applications; familiarity with wired and wireless terrestrial communication channels; and regulatory compliance such as for interference mitigation. The candidate should have strong interpersonal, oral and written communications skills, enabling effective coordination among subsystem design, integration, manufacturing, and test teams.

The Director of Systems Engineering is expected to bring a high degree of creativity and problem-solving capability to search outside the box for new solutions to questions in the design, assembly, and mass production of a cost-effective Satcom terminal. In addition, technical leadership is expected in the areas of analysis of complex antenna systems for all-electronic antenna systems and motion-controlled stabilized platforms, and monitoring and maintaining trends of performance across multiple product lines and customer development projects.

Initially they will act as an individual contributor towards the development of the terminals, but will be required to build and manage a world class systems engineering team that has responsibility for requirement and interface management, configuration and change management, document control within the greater engineering organization.
