Senior NPI Engineer
Isotropic Systems is seeking self-motivated candidates to join a fast-paced team working on cutting edge technology in a startup environment. Isotropic is pioneering the introduction of innovative and disruptive low-profile multiple-beam satellite communications terminals for mobile and fixed applications. These highly integrated terminal systems, typically operating from Ku-band through K/Ka-bands and above, combine elements of new advances in microwave lens optics, phased array antenna technology, and dynamic beam pointing control systems using analog and/or digital signa processing. They may operate as fully electronic beam steering systems with no moving parts or as hybrid electromechanical steering systems. Our innovative low-cost Satcom terminals will be used on stationary and mobile platforms for a wide range of applications including: aeronautical, land mobile, maritime, and 5G, providing broadband multiple beam two-way communications with dynamic tracking of geostationary and non-geostationary satellites or terrestrial nodes.
Isotropic Systems is seeking an experienced NPI Engineer with a history of successful product execution as part of its progression into the next phase of the company growth strategy. Reporting into the COO and working closely with the VP Engineering and Production Manager, the Senior NPI Engineer is responsible for ensuring the product vision is realized through excellence in translating Engineering designs into manufacturable products.
The Senior NPI Engineer will be focussed on DFMA&T (design for manufacture, assembly and test) principles to allow successful and efficient product introduction through the translation of engineering designs into manufacturable terminals for satellite communications. As the interface between the internal Engineering organisation and the external supply chain / manufacturing base, they will manage the transition of Design to Product according to project budget and schedule, whilst maintaining the metrics of Quality, Cost, Product Performance and Schedule.
Working as an integral part of the Engineering team they will influence design decisions early in the lifecycle through identification of suitable materials, components, manufacturing processes, assembly processes and product-qualification techniques that dovetail into the supply chain design.
With a remit that covers prototyping, pilot production and full production builds in a volume-production facility, they will be expected to identify and engage with appropriate 3rd party partners and contractors to fulfil a wide range of manufacturing services from quick-turn, low volume test pieces at the local level to high volume, sustainable high quality and low cost units in off-shore locations around the world. This includes the development of appropriate internal and external procedures and processes that self-manage the NPI activities in a formal framework of verifiable and accountable reporting.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Deliver products that meet quality, cost and performance metrics whilst achieving project budget and schedule milestones.
Acting as the authority on mechanical and electrical DFMA&T and in the context of the intended supply chain design, work in concert with the Engineering design team to ensure products are designed to suit manufacturing processes.
Champion new technologies, design methods and industrial processes / techniques to promote ongoing improvements that lead to product cost reductions and/or performance improvements.
Develop and maintain a high standard of NPI documentation to ensure full traceability of the production processes and procedures across the company. Drive a process of continuous improvements in accordance with ISO9001 certified quality management system.
Provide specifications and guidance to the Production Manager towards building and refining an efficient end-to-end supply chain (component sourcing to final packaging and shipping) that is tailored to our products.
Manage the development and ongoing support of in-house custom test equipment and associated software (as expected to be deployed in the production line).
Contribute towards the supply chain design through supplier selection and qualification.
Provide the associated technical support to represent our requirements to 3rd party production departments through the preparation of control documents and work instructions.
Carry out process validation for new/existing manufacturing processes to meet product requirements, including environmental qualification. Use of FMEA and risk management techniques as required.
Estimate, negotiate and agree with 3rd parties and internal managers on budgets and schedules for the NPI elements of the product development cycle.
Identify and implement reporting of product KPIs to track and improve productivity. Perform SPC studies to understand the process trend and yield. Develop any associated mitigation plans.
Initiate and coordinate the introduction of ECNs into production.
Generate and issue Component Inspection reports.
Provide support to Production for released products through their complete lifecycle, including any EOL (end of life) component replacement to maintain manufacturability.
Prepare and present design and analysis summary material during internal and external design reviews.
Other tasks, as assigned from time to time.
Skills and/or Experience Needed:
Minimum BSc/BEng in related Engineering or Manufacturing discipline.
10+ years of experience in product DFMA and management of the transfer of product from engineering to production for high volume, low cost manufacturing.
Proven experience in the design of efficient production lines including gauge/fixture design, development of automated and semi-automated test equipment for the production environment, statistical techniques (SPC's, Gauge R&R) and an awareness of measurement and calibration standards.
Extensive industrial experience in the implementation of PCBAs, moulding, casting and vacuum forming, including the associated DFM and tooling aspects for such processes.
Extensive experience identifying and interfacing with 3rd party suppliers and contract manufacturers, both local and offshore.
A solid understanding of quality management methods, statistical controls and supply chain management.
Ability to manage multiple projects having dynamic priorities on time and to budget, chair design reviews as needed and report project status to senior management.
Ability to interpret drawings (ASME and ISO) & GD &T, technical specifications, and product control documentation.
Technically proficient in MS Office products
Excellent communication skills - written and verbal. Fluency in written and spoken English
Ability to travel on request, sometimes for extended periods.
Ability to communicate calmly in a well thought out response (verbal and written) including dissemination of technical data and complex manufacturing topics.
Ability to negotiate with internal stakeholders and 3rd party suppliers / contractors.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Strong interpersonal skills. Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organisation and with customers and suppliers.
Ability to effectively present information in team meetings and design reviews as needed
A strong background in developing products for wireless communications and knowledge of the associated regulatory requirements for certification.
Knowledge of lean manufacturing, product routings and workflows.
