RF/Optical Design Engineer


Isotropic Systems is seeking self-motivated candidates to join a fast-paced team working on cutting edge technology in a startup environment.  Isotropic is pioneering the introduction of innovative and disruptive low-profile multiple-beam satellite communications terminals for mobile and fixed applications. These highly integrated terminal systems, typically operating from Ku-band through K/Ka-bands and above, combine elements of new advances in microwave lens optics, phased array antenna technology, and dynamic beam pointing control systems using analog and/or digital signa processing. They may operate as fully electronic beam steering systems with no moving parts or as hybrid electromechanical steering systems. Our innovative low-cost Satcom terminals will be used on stationary and mobile platforms for a wide range of applications including: aeronautical, land mobile, maritime, and 5G, providing broadband multiple beam two-way communications with dynamic tracking of geostationary and non-geostationary satellites or terrestrial nodes.


Isotropic Systems is seeking an outstanding RF/Optical Design Engineer to join our growing team of creative, highly skilled engineers.  The position is located at our UK office.

Experience in computational EM and simulation-based lens and antenna design, together with programming experience (Matlab, Python, etc.) would make for a very compelling candidate for this position. Knowledge or experience with the concepts of transformation optics would be even better, similar for work with microwave antenna arrays. Work with metamaterials/metasurfaces, transmitarrays, or reflectarrays is relevant. Antenna design and analysis, and RF circuit experience would be very beneficial. Independent, self-driven work ethic and good team, high verbal and written communication skills are required. Some travel to customer sites and our US office is possible.

Required experience:

Strong education and background in dielectric lens design and/or microwave antenna design.

Candidate Discriminators:

A strong candidate will be proficient in multiple of the following points.

  • Antenna design, modeling, and analysis, specifically focused on at least one of the following:

    • Homogeneous and inhomogeneous dielectric lenses

    • Antenna arrays – phased arrays, transmitarrays, reflectarrays, etc.

    • Beam shaping/forming, e.g. via metamaterials

  • Proficiency in electromagnetic simulation using 3D full-wave electromagnetic modeling software (e.g. ANSYS HFSS, CST, XFDTD, COMSOL etc.)

  • Conventional optical lens design, as well as gradient index (GRIN) optics

  • Strong Matlab/Python/similar skills

  • Use of optimization algorithms, particularly multi-objective stochastic optimizers

  • Transformation optics / transformation electromagnetics

  • Anti-reflection coating design and optimization

Basic Qualifications:

  • Relevant advanced engineering or physics degree required

  • Relevant experience required: 5 years with MS, 3 years with PhD
